Riad or Villa in Marrakech? How to Choose

In Marrakech, where you lay your head shapes everything that follows. Two very different schools compete for your stay: the traditional riad, hidden behind a discreet door in the Medina, and the contemporary villa, set among gardens in the residential Palmeraie or beyond. Neither is better — they are simply different. Here is how to choose with confidence.

The two schools

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around an interior courtyard, usually within the walled Medina. It trades on soul: zellige tilework, a plunge pool, a rooftop over the rooftops, and the call to prayer drifting across the old city. A villa is a modern, free-standing home — typically in the Palmeraie or the road to the Atlas — with generous space, a large heated pool, a garden and often a full staff.

Choose a riad if…

You want to be inside the story, not beside it.

  • You're a couple or small group who values atmosphere over space.
  • You want to walk to the souks, museums and Jemaa el-Fna.
  • You love design, history and the romance of the Medina.
  • You're happy with a plunge pool rather than a swimming pool.
  • You want characterful over large — and a more contained budget.

Choose a villa if…

You want space, privacy and the run of the place.

  • You're a family or larger group needing several bedrooms.
  • A big heated pool and gardens matter to you.
  • You want full staff — a private chef, housekeeping, a butler.
  • You're celebrating — a birthday, a reunion, a special occasion.
  • You value seclusion and quiet over being in the thick of it.

Our advice: do both

For stays of four nights or more, our guests' favourite formula is simple: two nights in a riad to feel the heartbeat of the Medina, then the rest in a villa to unwind in space and privacy. We arrange the transfer between them — and everything else — so the switch is seamless.
