The Moroccan Hammam: A First-Timer's Guide

The hammam is the beating heart of Moroccan wellbeing — a centuries-old ritual of steam, black soap and a vigorous scrub. If you have never been, here is everything you need to feel at ease.

Public hammam vs. private spa

A neighbourhood hammam is authentic, sociable and inexpensive; a hotel spa offers the same ritual in private luxury with signature massages to follow. We can arrange either — or a private hammam suite for couples.

The ritual, step by step

Expect warm steam, an application of savon noir (black soap), a thorough gommage (exfoliation) with a kessa glove, then a rinse and often an argan-oil massage. You leave feeling, quite literally, like new.

  • Hydrate well afterwards, and allow time to rest — you'll be wonderfully relaxed.
