Marrakech in 3 Days: The Ideal Itinerary

Three days is just enough to feel Marrakech's pulse without rushing — provided the logistics disappear and you spend your hours on what matters. This is the itinerary our concierges build most often for first-time guests: the storied Medina, the calm of the gardens, a long rooftop dusk, and a night out in the desert. Every transfer, guide and reservation below is something we arrange for you.

Day 1 — The Medina, palaces & Jemaa el-Fna

Begin early, while the souks are still waking and the light is soft. A private guide is the difference between a stressful maze and an unfolding story — they navigate the lanes, translate, and steer you past the tourist traps to the workshops worth seeing. Start at the 14th-century Ben Youssef Madrasa, the most beautiful Quranic school in Morocco, then the Bahia Palace with its painted cedar ceilings and tiled courtyards.

Break for a long lunch and a rest in your riad through the midday heat — a rhythm locals have followed for centuries. As the afternoon cools, lose an hour in the souks (we'll point you to the honest artisans), then arrive at Jemaa el-Fna as it transforms: storytellers, Gnaoua musicians, snake charmers and a hundred food stalls. Watch the spectacle from a terrace above the square rather than the thick of it.

  • Wear comfortable, closed shoes — the Medina is cobbled and uneven.
  • Agree any photo with a performer in advance; a small tip is expected.
  • Carry a little cash in small notes for the souks and stalls.

Day 2 — Gardens, Majorelle & a rooftop sunset

Devote the morning to green calm. The Majorelle Garden — the cobalt-blue oasis Yves Saint Laurent saved — pairs perfectly with the adjacent YSL museum and the Berber museum; go at opening to beat the queues (we pre-book your timed tickets). Afterwards, the lesser-known Le Jardin Secret, tucked inside the Medina, is a serene counterpoint.

After lunch, slow the pace right down with a traditional hammam and massage — the most restorative two hours of the trip. Then, as the light turns gold, settle onto one of the city's panoramic rooftops for a sunset cocktail or mint tea, the Koutoubia minaret and the snow-capped Atlas on the horizon. Dinner follows at a candle-lit riad or a design-led table in Guéliz.

  • Mornings are coolest and quietest for gardens — start by 9am.

Day 3 — The Agafay desert

Trade the city for the lunar stone desert of Agafay, under an hour away by private 4x4. Spend the day as actively or as gently as you like: camel or horse rides and quad biking for the energetic, or simply a long lunch and a pool day at a luxury desert camp for everyone else.

Stay for dinner under a canopy of stars — drummers around a fire, the lights of Marrakech glittering on the horizon — before your driver returns you to the city. It is the perfect, romantic full stop to three days.

  • Evenings in the desert are cool year-round; bring a light layer.

Where to stay & eat

For a first visit, base yourself in a riad inside the Medina to be in the heart of it — or, for space and a pool, a villa in the Palmeraie a short drive out (see our riad-vs-villa guide). For dinner, we hold tables at the best riad restaurants and rooftops and book on your behalf so you never queue.

Practical notes

Three days works beautifully as a long weekend. Marrakech is hot from June to September — plan gardens and the desert for early morning or evening. Fridays and prayer times affect opening hours and traffic, which your concierge will plan around.
